Scar Revision in Sydney

The Ashbrooke Cosmetic Surgery

What Is Scar Revision?

Scar revision refers to a spectrum of treatments designed to improve the appearance, texture, and colour of an existing scar without completely erasing it. Rather than a total removal of the scar, the goal is to make it less noticeable, more comfortable (less itching or pain), and better match surrounding skin. Scar revision may also help relieve contractures (tight scar bands), enhance mobility, or reduce visibility in cosmetically sensitive areas.

Revision is indicated when a scar causes cosmetic distress, impairs movement, is symptomatic (itching, pain), or continues to worsen.

At Ashbrooke Cosmetic Surgery, we offer various non-surgical cosmetic treatment that help with scar revisions.

Types of Scars

Understanding the type of scar is important in planning treatment, because different scars respond differently to procedures.

Hypertrophic scars

Raised, reddened or firm scars that remain within the boundaries of the original wound. Over time they may flatten, but often persist.

Keloid scars

These grow beyond the original wound borders, are often raised, may itch or be painful, and tend toward higher recurrence after treatment.

Atrophic (depressed) scars

The reverse problem: loss of tissue leads to sunken or pitted scars (commonly from acne, trauma).

Contracture scars

Generally from burns or large wounds, where scar contraction “pulls” surrounding skin and may restrict movement.

Stretched or wide scars

Scars under tension or in mobile areas sometimes widen over time without becoming raised.

Pigmented or discoloured scars

Scars that differ in colour (hyperpigmented, hypopigmented) even when contour is acceptable. These may overlap with any of the above types.

Potential Risks & Safety Considerations

As with any medical procedure, scar revision treatments carry risks. Some important points to consider include:

Infection, delayed healing, wound dehiscence

Bleeding, hematoma formation

Asymmetry, distortion, or contour irregularities

Sensory changes

Any concerns following the treatment should be discussed promptly with the practitioner.

Scar Revision Patient Journey

Scar Revision treatments generally includes the following steps:

Consultation

Before the procedure, a consultation assesses individual needs, allowing a tailored approach. It will involve a review of the  medical history, examining the scar, discuss goals and expectations, propose a plan, explain risks, procedure recommendations, cost, and timeline.

This consultation is also an opportunity to ask questions.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

Instructions will be provided to prepare for the treatment, which can include smoking cessation, discontinue certain medications, not going into the sun, etc. Pre-treatment photographs will also take place.

Depending on the choice of procedure, the treatment area is cleaned and prepared for a safe and effective procedure.

Treatment

Depending on the choice of treatment, whether that be laser procedure, facials, or injectables, the procedure will take place by the leading doctor, with sterilised equipment, and follow all necessary protocols, to ensure patient care, safety, effectiveneess, and to minimise any risks.

Post-Treatment Care

Patients will be given written and verbal aftercare instructions to support recovery and reduce the likelihood of adverse effects. Patient follow ups are likely to be recommended.

Suitable Candidates for Scar Revision

Not every scar or individual is an ideal candidate. Below are some factors that need to be considered:

Age of the scar

Scars typically mature over 12–18 months; intervening too early may lead to unpredictable remodeling.

Skin type / pigmentation risk

Darker skin has higher risk of post-treatment pigment changes, hypertrophy or keloid formation.

Location and mobility

Scars across joints or in high-tension areas are more challenging.

Scar characteristics

Depth, width, vascularity, pliability, tethering to underlying tissues, and surrounding skin quality.

Medical history

Conditions like diabetes, connective tissue disorders, smoking, poor circulation, keloid tendency, medications or poor wound healing.

Patient expectations

The patient must understand the limitations, expectations and commit to post-treatment care (sun protection, silicone, dressings, etc.).

Good candidates generally are healthy, have realistic goals, and are willing to comply with rigorous post-procedural scar care.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any more questions about Scar Revision in Sydney or any of our services, please don’t hesitate to contact us today.

When is the best time to revise a scar?

Generally, you should wait until a scar has matured, usually 12–18 months later, unless there are functional issues or severe symptoms. Mature scars are more stable, and earlier intervention risks unpredictable remodeling.

In theory many scars can be improved, but not all can be optimised fully. Some scars have too much tissue damage, or the patient’s biology (e.g. keloid predisposition) can make success limited.

Number of treatments varies, depending on what treatment you choose and how complex the scar is. Mild scars might respond in 1–3 sessions, where complex scars often require multiple modalities, possibly including surgery & repeat follow-up.

It is best to have a consultation with our doctor in order to review the scar. Then you will receive a more accurate answer.

That depends on how “medically necessary” the scar is (e.g. causing functional impairment) and on your insurance plan. Cosmetic-only revision is less likely to be covered.

Costs depend on scar size, complexity, choice of treatment, and number of sessions.

It is recommended to have a one-on-one consultation with one of our doctors to get a more accurate answer on the costs & expected outcomes.

Patients can typically expect a flatter, smoother, better-coloured scar that is less noticeable, although not total elimination. Results depend on scar type, skin, compliance, and treatment plan.
